After a weekend of over indulging in Valentine’s chocolate, we awoke to the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue and were reminded (in horror) of our New Year’s resolution! Did you know the average box of chocolates contains over 1,400 calories, which will take about 5 hours in the gym to burn off??
In our quest to get fit and feel gorgeous we came across Doonya, the hot new Bollywood workout that mixes fun, vibrant Indian music and dance moves into an hour long, high-intensity workout! Think Zumba, with a Bollywood twist! This will take care of at least a few pieces of chocolate!
We sat down with Doonya’s lovely founders, Kajal Desai and Priya Pandya for their take on everything from what to wear to a Doonya class to their favorite dance routine!
ISHARYA: What inspired you to create Doonya?
DOONYA: Doonya began as a dance and choreography company in 2005. A few years into our existence, students began seeing a difference in their bodies and asked for a more fitness-based class. Seeing their belief in Doonya methodology, movement, and instruction, as well as the real and effective results, inspired us to create what is now the Doonya signature program.
ISHARYA: How should you prepare for a class?
DOONYA: There really is no preparation required. Sometimes it’s better to go in with an open mind that is free of expectation! We find that it takes the 2nd or 3rd class to really start to understand the movements and begin to see the effects of the program. If students really want to prepare they can check out our DVD series or workouts via Youtube.
ISHARYA: What are the benefits of choosing Doonya over other fitness classes?
DOONYA: Doonya provides an open, accepting, and happy space for working out. The music and movements are ideal for those that want to enjoy working out. Along with the “fun” side though are real results. The choreography is thought out so that each movement connects to a specific muscle and the playlist is organized to create the most effective workout with varying levels of intensity, styles of movement to facilitate muscle confusion, and a full body workout overall.
ISHARYA: How should we dress to a class?
DOONYA: Any comfortable workout clothing will do, and please don’t forget the shoes! We currently wear (and love) Reebok’s dance line for both apparel and footwear. The colors are so Bollywood!
ISHARYA: How many classes a week do you recommend to really see results?
DOONYA: We recommend 3 times a week to really see the best and fastest results.
ISHARYA: Favorite dance routine so far?
DOONYA: There are so many to choose from ;)!
Priya’s current favorite is “Nagada Sang Dhol” from Ram-Leela.
Kajal’s is a toss up between the hip-hop/bhangra remix of Kanye West’s “Clique” and “Dhating Naach” from Phata Poster to Nikla Hero.
ISHARYA: One word that describes Doonya?
DOONYA: SWAPPY (ok fine it’s made up but its perfect — sweaty + happy = swappy)
