At some point, everything in fashion seems to end up as the new black, but what about the new stack? If you’re looking for an alternative to that stack of bracelets, midi rings are just the thing.

This gorgeous trend sped into overdrive courtesy of the Chanel Fall 2013 Haute Couture extravaganza. The setting for the rings was the Grand Palais in Paris, transformed into a “convincingly, dangerously derelict theater.” (To call this spectacle a mere runway show kinda understates – if not misses entirely – the point.) Rather, set to a dramatic soundtrack of opera and against a futuristic, filmic backdrop that shimmered like “an Emerald City on the Far Eastern frontier,” Chanel’s Creative Director, Karl Lagerfeld, spoke of being inspired by “tradition with future.”

Translation: a post-modern mashup of references from Grace Jones to Blade Runner, Victorian Era to Rihanna, and just enough Something-Elsiana to make the spectacle run like Fritz Lang’s Metropolis. “My whole life is a Fritz Lang moment,” noted Lagerfeld, who selects and curates most aspects of his runway productions. In summing up his collection, he cleverly described it as being “on the way from the Old World to the New World, and fashion is the only way to make the trip.”

Along the way, the midi rings adorning the models’ fingers like henna tattoos come to 3D life must have caught the eye of Rihanna, a regular fixture in the Chanel front row.

Other celebs who’ve happily hopped on the trend include Beyonce and the Olsen fashionistas. As tricky as they are, midi rings are an easy trend to try because there’s really no wrong way to wear them.

You can always just slip a single one on and see how it feels. Otherwise, balance is your fashion fraind. A rule of thumb (so to speak) that works well visually is to concentrate your stack of rings on your pointer finger, and wear a single, smaller midi on your middle finger and a short stack on your ring finger. This array looks balanced on the hand as a whole without looking like overkill.
And, as always, when it comes to rings and such things, a fresh mani is a great idea. Not only will your lovely hands be ready for all this attention, but it’s a great excuse to book a mani. Because…mani.

And because Chanel Méditerranée, our pick for this summer’s absolutely-no-question MUST-have. This oceanic blue is an on-point mix of teal meets murky seawater. It dries a bit muted, but will net you the compliments by the boatload without you even having to fish for them. Available at Chanel.com.
