Hollywood comes out to play on Oscar night, celebrating the most noteworthy films of the year, and offering the greatest fashion the world has to offer. Whether you are a film buff, a fashion maven or a little of both, the Oscars brings as night of fun and fantasy to your living room.
In addition to fabulous gowns and dazzling diamond jewelry, to make the “Best of” list on the red carpet, stars must step out with a completed look that works from head-to-toe. But how do they do it? Our stylists rounded up the formula for Oscar-style for your next cocktail party, starting with the dress!
Choose the Right Color
Every year there are a few of the hottest colors that stand out on the red carpet. Many of these colors are borrowed from the latest runway trends, and some evolve throughout award season. This year, we’ve noticed a strong affinity towards neutrals, blush, blue, green and florals.

Some starlets like relative red carpet newcomer Lupita Nyong’o can standout in any color. Whether in Prada aqua, Ralph Lauren red, or Gucci turquoise, Lupita ends up on the best-dressed list.
However, regardless of trend, our biggest suggestion is to select renditions of the latest trending colors that match the best with your own coloring and skin tone. Find out your pefect color match at Style Caster, and take a look at their cool vs. warm tone chart below.
Flatter Your Body Type
Now that you’ve selected your perfect color, move on to finding the right dress for your body. Do you have a hourglass figure, short legs, or a high-waist? Scroll through the Glamour guide for finding and dressing your body type.

While body conscious dresses have been a consistent Hollywood go-to, some stars opted for a roaring 20’s throwback with Gatsby-era flapper fringe. We love this trend! Plus, it’s a great way to offer some movement and shimmer.

The Right Undergarments and Tailoring
Winning style on the red carpet calls for breathtaking design combined with a flawless fit. To incorporate this into your red carpet style, chose pieces that are well-made and incorporate fabric and styling that works to the garments’ advantage.
If you haven’t found a personal tailor in your area now is the time to start looking! A few nips and tucks in the right places can help you walk out the door with a “tailor made” look every day.
Charlize Theron’s stylist, Leslie Fremar notes, “From trying on different gowns to alterations to the perfect undergarment, there’s so much that goes into the look long before the day of the event.” We agree, the right udergarment can make all the difference! Make an appointment at your local department store for a bra fitting, and don’t be afraid to take your gown in to have the fitter match up the right Spanx!
