Ear shells. Sea ears. Muttonfish. Muttonshells. Such low-key, unassuming names belie the glimmer and iridescence of the glamorous, ear-shaped oval they describe: the abalone shell. Related to the oysters, mussels and clams of the mollusk family, the abalone is mostly found off the coasts of Asia and South America.
Native Americans are believed to have been collecting abalone for at least 12,000 years, while in New Zealand, where abalone goes by pāua, it plays a significant role in Maori adornment. (In Great Britain, look for “ormer” while in South Africa, abalone is “perlemoen”.) Energy healers treasure abalone for its ability to soothe ruffled emotions and fire the imagination, sharpen intuition and chill out anxiety. The abalone shell is also said to remove fear and sorrow, cleansing them and replacing them with energies that strengthen the heart and stimulate creativity.
However, the real reason we suspect abalone is so widely coveted isn’t hidden. Or even skin deep. Abalone is beautiful. It comes in a startlingly wide array of varieties – almost 100! – and a painterly palette of intense hues dominated by bright blues, the greens of a peacock tail, luscious creams, off-whites and sugary, pastel pinks and purples. The colors collage into unique, organic swirls that are perfect for accessories and jewelry.
