When lava cools quickly, it can become the darkly beautiful volcanic glass known as obsidian. Its sharp edges made it highly valuable to Stone Age people as arrowheads, blades and, of course, obsidian jewelry. Eastern Islanders selected obsidian to fashion pupils for the eyes of their famous Moai statues. Depending on how it is cut, obsidian can appear either glistening grey or jet black, a unique property said to endow its wearer with strong powers of discernment and insight.
