The dazzling jewels, sparkly costumes, dramatic winged eyeliner and overall glam-o-rama of old Bollywood films has always fascinated us. So much so that they have been the inspiration for many of our jewelry designs. We rounded up three of our favorite leading ladies from the golden era of Bollywood along with pieces from our collection that we think they’d undoubtedly rock today.
Along with being the first Bollywood actress to appear on Time magazine, Praveen Babi revolutionized the image of the Bollywood heroine in the 70’s and 80’s by bringing in a fashionable westernized look to the very traditional Indian film industry. She broke all taboos with her over the top provocative costumes and liberal roles that defined the modern Indian woman. As the glam icon of Bollywood her appearances on the silver screen were always dramatic with bold statement making jewels that oozed exotic glamour.

Hema Malini is often referred to India’s original Dream Girl. Her girl next-door looks and flamboyant dance hits stole the hearts of Indian filmgoers during her 40-year career, which was sprinkled with every award, and honor an actress can receive in India. She took a very traditional Bollywood approach to dressing, often donning major Indian baubles and colorful Indian style costumes.

Sharmila Tagore is probably one of the most recognized old Bollywood actresses. Her legendary look complete with catwinged eyes and perfectly coiffed hair was the inspiration for fashionable women in India during her Bollywood reign in the 60’s and 70’s. One of her most memorable roles was in one of our favorite Bollywood films of all time, An Evening in Paris in which she played Deepa, a poor little rich girl who moves to Paris after her heart is broken. Sharmila’s blend of Indian and Parisian style in the movie inspires us each time we watch the flick!
