The Festival de Cannes isn’t your typical red carpet: for one thing, it’s held in France, the home country of C-H-I-C. For another, it’s on the French Riviera, lending the goings-on a more relaxed, seaside’y vibe. Which probably accounts for the third unusual element of this annual gathering of the glitterati: the mermaid factor. “Every time I see someone doing something adventurous with clothes, they’re in Cannes,” explains Vanity Fair’s fashion director, Jessica Diehl, in a recent interview about the stars’ more playful approach to the red carpet. “They’re away from LA,” she continues, “and they’ll take more risks.”
If getting your sea-nymph on doesn’t really float your fashion boat, the international film festival also showcased other key trends, including bright hues, retro appeal and the timeless black-and-white punch of tuxedo chic. Plus, of course there was no shortage of glamour!
(LE) SMOKING HOT
Le Smoking was one of designer Yves Saint Laurent’s timeless contributions to the world of style. Staying in fashion character as YSL muse Betty Catroux from the new movie “Saint Laurent”, model Aymeline Valade worked the Cannes red carpet in a tux by Saint Laurent. The mannish brogues, especially, make the ensemble a standout.
Head to toe magenta either looks hot…or not. It helps, of course, if the dress is custom Calvin Klein Collection and you’re a statuesque supermodel named Lara Stone. But touches of this hot hue can easily liven up whatever you’re wearing, particularly if it’s taupe, a soft baby blue or YSL’s favorite combination: pairing hot pink with tomato red.

BLACK & WHITE PRINT APPEAL
In Christian Dior Couture, the impossibly glamorous Marion Cotillard highlights the ethereal appeal of splashes of black with white. While the dress isn’t for everyday, our Black Jasper Goddess Stud Earrings certainly are, particularly when paired with an arm soiree!
IN THE NAVY
Even though the womanly mid-calf gown is modern Michael Kors (Spring 2014), it has a delightful retro appeal that totally suits Sofia Coppola’s eclectic fashion sensibilities. Part Jazz Age, part not – and 100% on-trend! If you’re looking for the effortless chic of black, but a touch softer, a can’t-lose choice is navy. Try earrings, a pendant, or a bangle and ring combo and pair with black, navy or nautical stripes.
Glamour is always on trend at Cannes, with some calling the Cannes red carpet the most glamorous of all! Blake Lively felt right at home, stunning in sparkly Chanel Couture. Her irradescent confection hit a more refined mermaid note and her long blonde locks re-define her position as one of America’s sweethearts.
Two of our favorite Bollywood actresses, Sonam Kapoor and Frieda Pinto, took to the Cannes red carpet in Oscar worthy gowns. We loved Sonam in Parisian Elie Saab couture and Freida in Oscar de la Renta. They really stole the show!
