For music lovers, iTunes has to be one of the greatest inventions ever, but as the weather turns nice and the winter thaw morphs into a raging case of cabin fever, nothing beats a live, sunsoaked music marathon with hundreds of thousands – and in some cases, a few million – of your fellow music fans.

Top Music Festivals around the World
Events like Coachella in the US and the UK’s Glastonbury are held over a number of days with multiple stages showcasing A-list talent like Paul McCartney, Arcade Fire, The Killers, Radiohead, Daft Punk, Madonna, The Cure, Kanye West, Rage Against the Machine, Beck, The Strokes, The White Stripes, Beyonce, JayZ, and Muse. While the US and UK host the most well-known festivals, Switzerland’s Paléo has featured Artic Monkeys as headliners, and Morocco’s Mawazine is a 9-day extravaganza featuring the best French-African talent and regularly draws well over two million people. And more than three million people flock to see 2000+ acts performing on 21 stages at Austria’s Donauinselfest, the world’s largest and most impressive such undertaking.
Many of these festivals started off spontaneously. A 1993 concert performed by Pearl Jam at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California to protest Ticketmaster’s control of venues laid the foundation for what became Coachella Festival, now held annually in the California desert. In Serbia, the EXIT Festival is organized around a different political theme each year, paying homage to the event’s roots as a movement to “exit out of the madness” of the repressive Serbian regime.

Guidelines to stay Fashionably Festive
If you’re festival bound this year, the last thing you’ll want to worry about once you’re there is what to wear. The attire generally reflects the progressive, boho spirit that gave rise to these festivals, so think 60’s Woodstock: diaphanous dresses and chic rompers, cheery colors and bold prints, vintage appeal and of course, festive jewelry (it is a festival, after all). This is the perfect occasion to let your inner flower child out to romp and play!
To keep you comfy and chic, we compiled these handy guidelines to help you pack lightly but with a fashionable punch.
Festival fashion basics available at Asos.
The temperature can vary dramatically, especially at festivals held in the desert, soaring above 100 degrees during the day and as soon as the sun sets, suddenly plummeting to chilly depths. So think layers. Bring one or two cute, loose dresses – be it a floor-length maxi or one as short as you dare – with a romantic, gypsy feel. And should you feel like a romp in the moshpit, a cute romper or shorts and a tank are just the thing. For evening, a denim jacket is the perfect topper. And don’t forget to bring a pair of stylish sweats for relaxing at the campsite.

You’ll only need two pairs: (1) an ankle boot to keep your feet clean and, at night, warm; if boots aren’t your thing, you could opt for fringed moccasins or espadrilles; (2) cute sandals for poolside lounging and partying. Which means if you haven’t already, it’s time to book that pedi!

If you’re moshpit bound, stash your stuff in a fanny pack. Trust us, the quickest way to ruin your rave is having a shoulder bag banging against your sides or worse, spilling its contents everywhere. For more chill activities, a vintage-style crossbody bag is the perfect size for carrying just the necessities while upping your style quotient. Even better if the bag is actual vintage and embellished with unusual trim or fun fringe.

5. Cool Jewels
The great thing about jewelry is that it’s such an easy way to switch up your look and takes up little no room in your bag. Think color, movement and punch (this is no time for demure little studs or delicate chains.) View our Festival style edit for our top picks!
