Long after September has come and gone, the month’s richly-hued birthstone will continue to call to your closet, as well as your nails, your hair, your makeup and even your perfume collection! Here are our picks of the best of this bonny blue trend.
For Fall/Winter ‘14/’15, sapphire blue was was selected by WHIT NY for its ability to help the designer channel a feeling of Scandinavian folk art meets Nordic woodlands. At BCBGMAXAZRIA, the hue flew far south to Louisiana and the bayou, where, notes Lubov Azria, the brand’s Chief Creative Office, “the juxtaposition of reflections, water and sky inspired the blues and natural tones in our collection.” And designer Rebecca Minkoff was drawn to sapphire for its ninja-like ability to be dialed down to the level of accent shade, but still shine brightly, especially as a tailored but tough moto. “Pairing the jacket with a midi-skirt or breezy bohemian dress,” she adds, “makes for a classic staple in a fall wardrobe.”
A fun way to wear sapphire blue is on your nails, as seen here on actress Olivia Wilde. She is sporting Wild Card, a standout shade that is a highlight of Revlon’s new ColorStay Gel Envy 2-step system. (We love this product for how easy it is to apply the combined base and color coat, followed by the Diamond Top Coat which delivers superior strength and a gemstone shine.) In addition to her duties as Revlon global brand ambassador, a role she has “played” since 2011, Wilde is also an activist who co-founded Conscious Commerce and sits on the board of Artists for Peace and Justice. She has hosted the EIF Revlon Run/Walk in NY for two consecutive years and participated in the LA event prior to joining Team Revlon. We think she’s living proof that gorgeous is as gorgeous does!

Thanks to her new sapphire-blue tresses, Nicole Richie now receives even more attention than ever. Especially from her #1 fan. “I coloured my hair for my daughter,” she told Lucky magazine. “It’s a lot of upkeep actually, but I’m very popular at her school. Everyone talks to me when I pick her up because they think I’m a character in Frozen. It’s great!”
To try on the trend, we would probably (um…better make that definitely) head to the salon, but if you’re feeling adventurous, few brands of DIY hair dye come as highly-recommended as Special Effects. Our pick: the cheerily-name Fish Bowl.
The original mistress of the towering blue beehive recently turned 25: the fabulous Marge Simpson! To celebrate a quarter century of life with everyone’s favorite animated family, M·A·C decided to mark the occasion with, what else, makeup! THE SIMPSONS features a vibrant sapphire shade of eyeshadow guaranteed to scream That Trillion Dollar Look and to blue-dye for. Eeeeexcellent!
SAPPHIRE FOR THE SENSES
If sapphire had a scent, what would it be? Just ask the Grasse-born nose Nathalie Lorson, whose long list of perfume hits includes Shiseido Zen, Paul Smith Women, Yves Saint Laurent Black Opium, Chloe Innocent, Bvlgari Pour Femme and Mandarina Duck Black Extreme. For her the turn-of-the-millenium classic, Boucheron Jaipur Saphir, she reimagined the gemstone as a fragrance and was inspired to create an alluring Oriental Vanilla masterpiece. Top notes include mandarin orange, yuzu, white peach and cardamom; middle notes are magnolia, cinnamon, jasmine and heliotrope; base notes are comprised of amber, musk, benzoin and vanilla.
The Greek word Sappheiros means “blue stone” and was actually thought to originally refer not to the sapphire but to Lapis Lazuli. Here are some of our picks to help you sapphire things up this fall. Clockwise:
