Holi has been gaining interest and attention worldwide, becoming the focus of Coldplay and Beyonce’s ‘Hymn for the weekend’ music video earlier this year. It’s a festival that brings out the inner child in all of us, a day filled with water balloons, bright splashes of color and lots of fun.

There are many legends behind the celebration of Holi, but the two most widely known are the triumph of Prahlad over Holika and the story of a mischievous young lord Krishna.
The Stories of Holi
According to Hindu Mythology, King Hiranyakashyap wanted everyone in his kingdom to worship him. However his son, Prahlad, chose Lord Vishnu instead. Enraged by this, he asked his daughter Holika, who was resistant to fire, to lure Prahlad into a fire. Prahlad’s devotion to lord Vishnu was so strong that he survived the fire. Holika was killed because she used her gift to do harm – hence the name, Holi. Many Hindus light a bonfire to symbolize this victory of good versus evil.

The play of color however, comes from another story, one of a Radha and Krishna. It is believed that the young Lord Krishna was poisoned by a demon named Putana that turned his skin dark blue. Complaining to his mother, Krishna says the fair-skinned Radha and the other Gopikas (women) would never appreciate him due to his skin. To appease the child, she said to go and paint Radha’s face with whatever color he wanted, so that they’d both be equal. This simple story over the years has transformed into the giant celebration of color we know today.
